Where is your clinic?
I'm based at two clinics in central Auckland: Maurani Clinic, 86 Great South Road, Epsom, and The MacMurray Centre, 3 MacMurray Road, Remuera, Auckland.
Do you have online appointments?
I consult all over New Zealand and am happy to do online appointments, as long as your local GP is also involved in your care. I do prefer to see you in person and especially with children because I can keep an eye on their growth and they often give clues about their feeding world in their body language.
What do I need to do before my appointment?
Once you have registered and have an appointment, you will be sent a pre-consultation questionnaire. Please take some time to fill this in and return it to the clinic well before your appointment, particularly if you have a long list of medications and/or a complex medical history. If you have clinic letters from other Specialists involved in your care, please bring copies of your most recent letters. If you have had blood or other tests done, please bring copies or make sure you can access them on your My Health App. If you are bringing your child in, please bring their Well Child Book
Do I have to keep a food diary before I see you?
Keeping a food diary for several days can help you remember what you have eaten. However, it's not necessary to keep a diary. We'll talk about what and how you eat during your appointment.
What happens at our appointment?
At your appointment, I will take a detailed nutritional history with consideration of your other medical concerns. We’ll talk about your goals and concerns before looking at your lifestyle and the foods you eat and avoid. We’ll come up with a practical plan and what you need to support you making it a success. If additional tests are needed, we can get these done through your GP or Specialist. You’re more than welcome to bring a family member or friend to support you.
How many appointments will I need?
This varies hugely depending on what your issues are and are tailored to your needs. Typically appointments are well spaced every 3-4 weeks or longer so you can work on your goals in between.
Can I claim on insurance?
Most medical insurance policies cover Registered Dietitians and some offer additional cover when the referral is made by a medical specialist. Typically policies only cover about half of the initial appointment but most of subsequent appointments. Check your cover with your medical insurance provider. You will need to make payment on the day of your appointment and claim the cost back from your medical insurance provider.
What’s the difference between a dietitian and nutritionist?
In New Zealand, dietitians have an undergraduate university qualification and post-graduate qualification in Dietetics. We must be registered with the Dietitians Board. Every year, we have to show evidence of best practice, peer review and continuing education. There are no standard qualifications for nutritionists, and it's an unregulated profession. This means anyone can call themselves a nutritionist. Dietitians' scope of practice includes the medical and nutritional care of patients.
Why don’t I see any testimonials from clients on your website?
Having worked with hundreds of clients, you’d expect to see some reviews of how I’ve helped transform their lives. As a New Zealand Registered Dietitian, I’m restricted by law and unable to share client testimonials. As a dietitian, I have an annual registration certificate issued by the Dietitians Board, which requires me to show evidence of practice and learning. The best way to see if I can help you is for you to make contact, and we can talk.
